What is transit cargo transportation?

Transit cargo transportation is one of the transportation services, which passes through other countries before reaching its destination. It has a complex structure. This type of cargo transportation requires mandatory implementation of safety requirements, as well as observance of laws of the country by which the cargo transfers.

There are the following types of transit cargo transportation:

    • ✓ Land transit cargo transportation, which includes:
    • • Road transit cargo transportation,
    • • Railway transit cargo transportation.
  • ✓ Air cargo transportation,
  • ✓ Marine cargo transportation

Acts and agreements regulating transit cargo transportation

Transit cargo transportation is regulated with the help of cross-border agreements, which are multilateral and bilateral agreements. They are related to the rights’ issues to enter international markets and regulate the transportation procedure in the territories of different countries.

The UN Convention is the basis for the regulations of international transit transportations. According to this Convention, sealed and transported cargoes are not subject to inspection. The customs duty is paid when the cargo reaches its destination point.

The clearance process of transit cargoes

Transit cargoes are formalized in the customs office or in freight forwarding companies, which provide complex logistics services. Depending on the implementation of customs clearance, there are direct and indirect transit services:

  • ✓ In case of direct transit, customs clearance is carried out without transferring cargoes to additional warehouse;
  • ✓ Indirect transit cargo is a way of transportation, as a result of which the cargo is transported to a customs warehouse in order to take it out of the country in the future.

Customs transit is allowed in case of compliance with the following conditions:

  • • The cargo is not included in the list of dangerous or prohibited goods,
  • • The cargo was transferred through the border crossing,
  • • All the documents confirming international transit transportation and declaration are available,
  • • The vehicle is in excellent condition (it is equipped with special equipment, there are seals etc.).

For customs clearance you will need the following documents:

  • • Confirmation of applicant's rights
  • • Documents confirming cargo ownership
  • • Transportation documents (invoices, cargo insurance acts, vehicle registration certificate)
  • • Document certifying compliance with the laws of EAU (Eurasian Economic Union) countries
  • • Cheques, payment papers (confirming the payment of customs duties)

Customs payments can be made at the customer’s request:

  • • In cash
  • • By pledge of property
