Especially the transport of food by road

Food transportation plays an important role in the industry of transportation services. Unlike other cargoes, food has a short expiration date and also, needs special temperature which will ensure its maximum long-term storage. Foodstuff is divided into the following groups:

  • ➢ Non-perishable foods, which are those products that keep their consumption possibilities for a longer period of time (for example, sugar, pasta, canned food).
  • ➢ Perishable foods. These include the products that have a limited storage life and require special temperature.

The types of perishable products are the followings.

  • ● Plant based foods (fresh vegetables and fruits)
  • ● Animal source foods (fresh meat, fish, poultry, eggs)
  • ● Processed foods (smoked foods, cheese, milk, curd, etc.)

Food products are also distinguished by their storage temperature

  • ● Storage and transportation, 0-150 С
  • ● Chilled products, -5-00 С
  • ● Frozen products (stored at -6-200 С temperature)

Vehicles for transporting foods

Transportation of foodstuffs should be carried out by the vehicles, that have never been used for the transportation of various chemicals and dangerous goods.

The vehicle intended for transportation of foodstuffs must have a sanitary passport, and the car driver is required to have a medical book.

The transportation of non-perishable food should be carried out by the vehicles, which do not need special equipment in order to keep the required temperature. Regardless of the fact, that food can be stored for a long time, depending on temperature conditions their transportation has some restrictions.

Transportation of perishable products

Temperature conditions of vehicles’ body must meet the transportation requirements of each type of product.

Perishable foods are transported by vehicles that are equipped with equipment that keep the required temperature (refrigerators) or will maintain special temperature conditions for a long period of time (isotherm).

First of all, the car or any other modes of transportation must meet the required class for the transportation of cargo. Also, keeping the cleanliness of car’s body and sanitary-hygienic conditions is very important. If the cargo does not have its own sealed box or container, then the vehicle must be sealed after loading the food.

Perishable products may be frozen for long journeys, if this process has not been implemented in advance. Frozen products are transported only in freezers that can maintain temperatures up to -200C.
